February 2012: Castlegate Exocet takes reserve senior championship in Stirling
Congratulations to club member Stuart Addison who took the reserve senior championship in Stirling this month with his <arch 2010-born Castlegate Exocet K024. By Balsar Buccaneer G037, he is out of the Castle of Mey Elscot daughter Idvies Euxette Z008 and with a SRI of +38 he sold to the Crofters Commission, Inverness for 4000gns.

Decmeber 2012: YDP member Hannah Slowen receives her Animal Care certificate
Club member and successful YDP participant Hannah Slowen received her certificate in Animal Care as a result of her hard work and determination in last year’s Youth Development Programme, run by the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society. Hannah received her award from the now Society President Angus Stovold at last year’s East of England Smithfield Festival.

November 2011 - North East Calf Show
Victor and Paula Dobson’s Water End herd recorded a memorable double at last weekend’s North East England Aberdeen-Angus Club calf show, with their heifer calf Water End Miss Betsy L090 taking the female and overall championship and their bull calf Water End Evolution L095 taking the male and reserve overall title.
The day’s champion, Miss Betsy L090 is a Blelack Evergreat H003 daughter and was born in January this year. She is out of The Moss Mr Essen D413 daughter Water End Miss Belle H070 and had previously been calf champion at the Winter National Show at Carlisle last month.

Judge Jimmy Minto described Miss Betsy as a well balanced heifer displaying excellent breed character with superb locomotion.
Her sire, Evergreat was purchased in February 2010 for 7000gns and was also sire of the male champion from the Dobsons, Water End Evolution L095.
Evolution, a February 2011-born bull calf is out of Water End Ebony H066, another Mr Essen daughter.
Standing reserve heifer champion was The Moss Kitt L051 from the Moores family’s herd. This one is a daughter of Chapelton Eventer E809 out of The Moss Kirsty Z039, a TC Stockman daughter. She is a January-born calf and stood second in her class to the heifer champion.
Reserve bull calf champion was Gordon Brooke’s Linton Gilbertines Phoenix Star L456. This January-born bull is by Rawburn Enigma G653 and out of Belhaven Pole Star H070, a Rawburn Lord Ross daughter.
Picking up the event’s award for the best newcomer at the show was the Saville herd of Stephen and Sarah Medley.

October 2011 - Club success at Aberdeen-Angus Winter National Show
Taking the majority of the day’s prizes at the Aberdeen-Angus Winter National Show, held in conjunction with Borderway Agri-Expo, and making it a second win in two years for a member of the North East England Aberdeen-Angus Club was Water End Miss Betsy L090 from Victor and Paula Dobson, Holme-on-Spalding Moor, York.
This January 2011-born heifer calf is by the herd’s stock Blelack Evergreat H003, who was purchased in February 2010 for 7000gns, and is out of The Moss Mr Essen D413 daughter Water End Miss Belle H070.

This was a huge achievement for Victor and Paula who were helped in the show ring by fellow breeder Stuart Addison, as they took the heifer calf, overall calf and female championship. Miss Betsy L090 is likely to make an appearance on next year’s show circuit. Describing the heifer judge Mr Baillie said: “She is an exceptional heifer with great locomotion, breed character, length and natural fleshing.”
Speaking after his win, Mr Dobson who runs just nine cows under the Water End prefix, said: “This is the best the herd has ever done on a national level. We’ve won local competitions and calf shows in the past, but to compete with some of the finest breeders from all over the UK and win the calf section is a huge achievement for us.”

August 2011 - Bon Lea take top honours at Ryedale Show
Taking the overall championship at Ryedale Show and continuing a very good winning streak was Bon Lea Angus with their April 2010-born bull Bon Lea Proud North Star K080. This one is by Rawburn Rommel and is out of Bon Lea Petra D031.
Standing reserve champion was Bryan Ronan with Jerusalem Lady Jane J155, a March 2009-born heifer by Ankonian Elixir out of the Dalrene Cuz 11F daughter Netherton Lady Jane X3.
August 2011- Water End Jacky J074 takes reserve interbreed at Huby and Sutton Show
Leading the way for the Aberdeen-Angus breed at Huby and Sutton Show last Sunday was Victor Dobson with his two year old heifer Water End Jacky Erica J074. By The Moss Mr Essen D413 and pout of Chines Jacky Erica Z374, she also went on to take the reserve interbreed championship.
July 2011 - Whittaker Farms wins Angus championship at GYS
Leading the way at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show and following on from her win at last month’s Royal Highland Show was the nine year old cow Rosemount Justine Erica from Peter and Linda Whittaker and Fraser and Christina Cormack.

Judge David Lucas of the Cheeklaw herd described her as: “the perfect cow everyone wants to breed, she’s correct, looks amazing for her age and is incredibly feminine with great breed character.”

Taking the reserve overall spot was the reserve female champion Linton Gilbertines Ella from Gordon Brooke. By Rawburn Rommel and born March 2009, Mr Lucas said she was “a powerful heifer with good locomotion and great presence in the ring.

Taking the male championship was Glympton Estate with their senior bull Rawburn Rock Solid. Born March 2006 and purchased from Perth in 2007, Rock Solid is by Hoff Limited Edition and is stock bull for the herd’s 55 pedigree cows.
Standing reserve male champion was Bon Lea Emperor from brother and sister team James Brooks and Victoria McLaren. Emperor was a first prize winner at the Highland last year and was also National Show calf champion last year in Carlisle.

July 2011 - Charity auction for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and AA YDP

June 2011 - Successful Royal Highland Show for Club members
This year’s Royal Highland Show was a particularly successful one for North East of England Club members under judge John McEnroe from Co Meath, Republic of Ireland, with the champion and reserve male champion coming from our area.
Leading the honours was Peter and Linda Whittaker and Fraser and Christina Cormack of Whittaker Farms and Co, Northumberland. Their nine year old cow won the senior cow class and then went on to take the female and overall supreme honours. Rosemount Justine Erica B296, a daughter of Heath House Plato, was purchased last May when spotted by Fraser at Rosemount when he was foot trimming.

She resides with Fraser and Christina and is part of the 24 pedigree Angus cows on the farm. Having already taken reserve interbreed honours at the Northumberland Show, earlier in the year, she might possibly make an appearance at the Great Yorkshire Show next month. Erica was shown with a heifer calf at foot by the 23,000gns Chapelton Eventer.
In the male championship, brother and sister team James Brooks and Victoria McLaren took the reserve overall spot with their yearling bull Bon Lea Proud North Star K080, an April 2010-born son of Rawburn Rommel E423 and out of Bon Lea Petra D031, a Johan of Bon Lea daughter. The Bon Lea team also took a red ticket with Bon Lea Emperor K079, a March 2010-born bull again by Rommel, this time out of the 2005 Royal Show and Great Yorkshire Show interbreed champion Bon Lea Elle C017.

In the heifer classes Gordon Brooke won the heifer class for heifers born between 1st January and 23rd June 2009 with the homebred Linton Gilbertines Ella J177, a March 2009-born daughter of Rawburn Rommel E423 out of Rawburn Ebony. He also stood third with Belhaven Pole Star H070 in the 2008 female class.
June 2011 - Bon Lea Emperor adds to success at North Yorkshire Show
Taking the overall championship at North Yorkshire Show on the 19th June under judge Richard Rettie, Alloa, and adding to a multitude of success gained last year was Bon Lea Angus with their yearling bull Bon Lea Emperor. Standing overall reserve champion was Chris Pageâ€s Carmains Jupiter Eric.

November 2010 - Bon Lea win championship at North East England Calf Show
The 2010 North East of England Aberdeen-Angus Calf Show, judged by James Hopper of the Kellythorpe herd, saw 34 calves entered. The champion calf came in the form of regular winner and National Show calf champion Bon Lea Emperor KO79 a March born bull calf from the Brookes family.

September 2010 - Castlegate lead North East of England offering at Best of the Blacks
The recent Best of the Blacks sale, held at St Boswells in the Borders, saw Stuart Addison lead the way for the North East of England Club offering, with his February 2008-born heifer Castlegate Ruby H019. This Northumberland Show champion is by drumcrow Proud Peacock C175 and is out of the Mr Eamonn of Church Farm daughter Castlegate Robyn. She sold at 7000gns to Mike Frazer, Ballyclare, Co Antrim, for his Eden Vale herd.
Overall the sale topped at 15,000gns and averaged £3425.62 for 8 cows and calves and £3948.91 for 23 heifers.

August 2010 - All set for the Aberdeen-Angus Winter National Show
Plans for this year’s Aberdeen-Angus Winter National Show to be held in conjunction with Borderway Agri-Expo at Carlisle on the 29th October are well under way with the addition of classes and a considerable prize fun on offer for exhibitors.
Due to the success of last year’s event, the show has been re-branded to capture the essence of a winter national event. The event now includes three section championships for calves, yearlings and cows and calves.
The 2011 event will then include a class for two year old heifers with calves at foot, a step towards creating futurity classes for both winter and summer Aberdeen-Angus National Shows.
Winter Show organiser Bryan Ronan says: “Each year the event at Carlisle grows and we are delighted to rebrand the event and create a national winter national show for exhibitors. The prize fund for the three sections is the highest it’s ever been and we look forward to seeing as many exhibitors from all over the UK attend.”
Judge for this year’s event is Marion Tilson of the noted Wedderlie herd at Gordon, Berwickshire. No stranger to large scale show events, Mrs Tilson has judged at numerous shows in the UK and abroad.
Entry forms will soon be available from both Harrison and Hetherington, Barbara Webster at the Aberdeen-Angus office and will soon be downloadable from the Society’s website. The entry fee will be £15/animal and the closing date for entries will be October 1st.

June 2010 - “Bon Lea Ellisand wins North Yorkshire Show”
Taking the championship at the North Yorkshire County Show on the 20th June under judge Mr F Reveley was the April 2008-born bull Bon Lea Ellisand H071 from the Brooks family. By Catrionas Ellisand D131, he is out of Bon Lea Elegance E037.
The reserve championship went to Fox Foot Bonny J224 from the Turnbull family. Bonny is by The Moss Eudorus E530 and is out of Cheeklaw Black Bonny D161.

May 2010 - “Newark & Notts Show”
Kicking off this year’s show season is Brian McClintock, Macclesfield, Cheshire, who took the reserve interbreed championship at this year’s Newark and Notts Show with his March 2006-born bull Chathill Eugo F230. Bred by Pip Robson, Northumberland, Eugo is by Vermillion Payweight J847 and is out of Cudlobe Eugenie 2J. He has a TI of +31 and a SRI of +42. He took the breed championship ahead of Norfolk-based exhibitor Duncan Jeary.

May 2010 - “Otley Show”
Leading the way at Otley Show on Saturday 22nd May under judge George Redpath was Fox Foot Bonny J224, a February 2009 heifer from the Turnbull family of Coxwold.
By The Moss Enduron E530, she is out of Cheeklaw Black Bonny D161 and was female champion at the regional calf show last November and was placed third in a strong class at Newark at the beginning of the month.
Due to lack of entries, unfortunately, the show only had two classes. The bull class was won by JF and S Heath of Ravenfield Angus, Cowden, Hull with JC Lister Farms taking second and the Heath’s taking third.
In the female class, which Foxfoot Bonny won, Chris Page came second and third, with JC Lister Farms coming fourth and fifth and the Heath’s coming sixth.

May 2010 - “Aberdeen-Angus in the picture”

The lucky winner will be featured on the front of the 2011 North East England Aberdeen-Angus Club calendar, which we are in the process of setting up. More details of the calendar will follow shortly, but if you would like your herd to be featured please contact Victor as spaces will obviously be limited.
May 2010 - “Points trophy to include Club Calf Show”
Included in the last edition of the Club newsletter was a points card to help all show exhibitors keep a tally of their points earned throughout the summer shows. Please note the points for club trophies will include the Calf Show at Thirsk in November which will count towards the awards in 2011 for the junior calves.
